The Refugee Committee’s Spring Fair seemed to have taken on a life of its own. The controlled chaos started Friday evening when our mob of enthusiastic volunteers descended on the church hall to set up for the Fundraiser on Saturday morning.Tables were labeled for their assigned tasks and then piled up with stuff ... LOTS OF STUFF. You could almost hear the tables groaning under the load.  We had a very broad range of goodies: clothing, knickknacks, books, board games, lots of knitted items and knitting yarn, baked goods, plants, assorted blankets, cushions and of course the silent Auction items. Although Saturday started off with quite a downpour of rain, it stopped just before the Fair opened and the afternoon was bright and sunny. This allowed our culinary team to barbecue the hot dogs without getting wet. Can you think of anything worse than a soggy hot dog bun? There was a good flow of shoppers throughout the day. Despite the brisk sales, there were quite a few items remaining at 3 pm closing time. Did I mention that we had LOTS OF STUFF? We also had a deadline of 5 pm to have the hall available for the next group of users. The remaining items were packed up for transport and storage. Tables and chairs were cleaned and returned to their places, signs removed, clothes racks disassembled, and the floors cleaned. Our great team of enthusiastic volunteers got the job done by 4 pm!! The Fair proved to be an excellent way of getting to know each other. We found solutions to unexpected situations, drawing on each others’ energy and enthusiasm.  A super big thank you to everyone, the young and the not so young, who worked together so smoothly and made the event a success. It really showed that a small group of volunteers can make big things happen.  By the way, that "silver haired kid" mentioned in an earlier Newsletter was very happy. She got her balloon animals!  We raised $2,606.25 but are still counting because some unsold items have been listed on Facebook Marketplace and others are at a consignment store. The money from these sales will ultimately go towards our total. We will provide updates as they become available.Thank you, everyone, for contributing your time and energy!
